I used to dive a lot of cold water, a double hose would not freeze up on you.
A high quality 2-hose like the Royal Aquamaster or Snark III also had good breathing characteristics, much better than the cheezier single hoses.
It was well into the '70's before I got a couple of Cyklons. They were the first single hose regs in the US that had antifreeze protection on the 1st stage.
Double hose regs are also great for photography.
