It makes a whole lot more sense to use a Zodiak boat with a big powerful engine on it to get into hard to reach coves than rapelling into them.

Another alternative is to use a boat or kayak to ab dive the long rocky reef that runs parallel to the Mendocino coastline about 50 to 100 yards/meters out. There are huge abs that are more than legal even sideways out there. Looks for waves breaking off the coast out in the Ocean.

Rapelling is one of my favorite sports in the HIGH THRILLS / HIGH RISK category. More youthful folks are killed by falls than any kind of statistic for premature deaths. Rapelling is more dangerous than shark diving.

Having said that, it is in fact true, that a fair amount of ab divers rapell to their favorite top secret ab sites, in my experience.

My take: Get a kayak, its safer, and not as expensive as buying a boat or paying medical bills for a rapelling fall.
