My mother was head of the YMCA aquatics for the Centenella (sp?) Valley Y's in the '60's. That area basically covered the L.A. South Bay region. She would accept students starting at 3 mths. She taught me to swim before she taught me to walk. Instead of hiring a babysitter, she would toss me in the pool and tell me to keep to the deep end and stop teasing the older kids (5 years old) who were just learning to swim. It seems that kids who waited that long to learn swimming had learned a fear of water.
And before you flame...
I know that swimming lessons are different from scuba for kids. I don't DM for kid scuba classes, but I will supervise kid snorkeling sessions.
