I frequently cover a lot of territory on the surface & like using my snorkel.
Snorkel is stashed on the inside of my weight belt suspender while on the bottom in a couple of o-rings tacked on with heavy thread.
Nice & clean, no snag or drag.
There is no blanket statement of "take it" or "leave it on the boat" that can cover all situations.
Gotta use your brain to decide if it'd be handy to have or not.
Instructors teaching "no snorkel" are doing their students a disservice.
