Try walking or bicycling up Alamo Mtn. in Frazier Park or from the center of Anza Borrego to any of its edges...you'll die unless someone brings you food and water via a motorized vehicle because the distances are so great.
Motorized vehicles are an excellent way to enjoy the vast expanses of the California desert and forrests when vehicle operators obey the rules and limit their travel to designated routes and trails.

I have heard a lot of bullshit from the DIR taskforce for better diving but I have yet to hear a fitness argument because it would be too hypocritical especially from the local loudmouth. The most self promoted DIR afficianados on the west coast are on the opposite end of the spectrum from "in shape" to say the least.

How are you going to take in the tranquil nature scene if it is far away from where you can park your vehicle and you don't have a week or month to hike to it?
