1) Ignorance. Sounds like you were in Sports Chalet where knowledge of diving insures you won't get hired. Most of the people who work in their dive departments know nothing about diving.
2) To sell you another fill.
3) As a recruiting technique. That is, if the customer was dumb enough to accept this answer, the employee can then refer the customer to Personnel for possible employment which then nets the employee a referal fee.
