My OW course I teach is over 8 weeks long, includes class and pool once per week, requires students to come in and practice on their own between class sessions. Our pool is 14' deep to emulate real diving better. There is the minimum of two days of open water diving and I usually try to make one of them before the end of the class so students realize their short-comings and we can practice them together.
It is my opinion that my students do get enough experience to dive within the limits of Open Water certification.
