good observations on the limits of knowledge!
having read "Plato" I have found that the teachings of Socrates were very idealistic. Plato's Academy taught another famous philosopher who had an immense effect on Western thinking, Aristotle.
If you take Plato and Socrates on the one hand, and Aristotle on the other, you are compelled to choose between their two schools of thought.
I would have to go with Aristotle. Long story, even longer debate. Aristotle seems to be much more pragmatic, whereas Plato and Socrates were excessively idealistic, in my opinion, JRM.
