While I don't always see eye to eye with you on a lot of issues, I find
the idea of extremely deep diving like that being done with air to be
fairly incomprehensible, let alone doing it solo. I have done a lot of
solo dives with no harm, but I personally would guess that for myself (when
I was in good shape) making a dive like that, I would stand only about
a 50 - 50 chance of surviving on any particular dive, with a buddy or
not.
It is really to bad that this diver passed away, but as you said I get
the feeling that, there were a lot of problems involved in that dive.
He got into something that seems quite incredibly dangerous. It seems
clear that when diving, depth is the usually the greatest hazard.
As you said, that was not a recreational dive.
In any case, good job searching.
