Only in that particular instance/situation. Obviously buddies are important potential life savers in other scenarios. And I didn't run out of air until I hit the surface. And, yes, I could have made the safety stop were I accompanied by a buddy with an octo. So should I have stuck with the buddy on that dive? If I did, I wouldn't have recovered the porthole. Is a porthole worth more than my life? Depends on the porthole!
