Steve, I have been reading about Red Blood Cell Rigidity for a few years now. There have been some scientific papers written about it and studies done.
Most of what I have read are theories. But if the theories are true damage can be done on rec. air dives (probably very little).

read the article by Robert Monoagham "Dying By Pieces, Soft Tissue Damage" in the article he talks about Red Blood Cell and White Blood Cell damage. I will look for more information over the weekend (no beach diving, we got big surf) and on Monday for you.
