i always take my own gear. I figure that should a situation arise, i would want to have the utmost familiarity with my equipment, and be able to access anything blindfolded, on a pitching boat in 10 foot seas or at 130 fsw in 2 foot vis while being kicked in the head by my buddy's fins ; ) oh yeah, just remembered a bit of good news; vis in French Polynesia is exquisite! among the best i have ever seen, and the corals, while not overly spectacular, do appear to be in good health (as of 4/98)!
