i know that some of my more knee-jerk, ideological colleagues have voiced opposition on the grounds that anything that benefits the oil industry cannot have any redeeming value whatsoever. About a year or so ago, the local Sierra Club newsletter had a small piece that was mostly skeptical of the whole idea. Keep in mind that these folks may typically be 1) too busy to read up on the subject and 2) afraid of the water and will not likely to ever get scuba certified and actually see whats down there. Their marine biology is limited to the intertidal zone. I say these seemingly inflammatory statements based on my experience as a grad student for several years in the biological sciences at a well known local university.

still, it would be nice if they let us take scallops, for at least a part of the year! say, in the Spring after bug season is over??
