Over the counter recommendations:

Dramamine leaves me feeling like I spent the whole night without getting any sleep. It wears off in 12 hours, so for most single day trips you have to take a second dose sometime during the day.

I've had the best results with Bonine, not only because it is 24 hours per pill, but also because I don't feel strung out the way I do when I use Dramamine.

Most important thing to remember about these pills is that they need to be into your bloodstream for a while before your boat leaves the dock. This means you should probably take a pill the night before, preferably right before you go to sleep. They don't do any good if you take them right as the boat pulls away from the dock. You will be out on the ocean before the pill will have had time to dissolve into your bloodstream.
