Today we headed out with the Sea Divers to Oil Rig Eureka and the
wreck of the Olympic.
Eureka sits in 705' of water (freshly metered today) and had 100'+ vis
with alomst no swell or surface chop. There was a -slight- current
that couldn't make up it's mind to go NW or SE as the morning
progressed. All divers on the boat had absolutely no problem
negotiating what bit there was.
Everyone took scallops it seemed... and they were plentiful in the
75-90' range. Of course we had our regulars on board as well as the
usual great Sea Divers gruop (as compared to the unsual Sea Divers
group ;-0).
We did two dives there and motored on to the wreck of the Olympic.
The Olympic was equally calm with no swell or surge. The vis was a
decent 20' on the deck (or what's left of it) with lots of fish all
over it. There was also a new gill net on the wreck - which made
things a tad tricky for some dives. It looks as if there was one of
the old rope nets, covered by an old green gill net, covered by an
VERY recent red gill net - which still had it's buoys atatched!
We did have a slight snafu with a stuck anchor, but thanks to the
experienced - and continually vindicated - DM, it was hand pulled at
depth. Those GUE Tech classes have really paid off when it comes to
multiple lift bag deployments.
Rhonda out did herself - as usual - with a fantastic spinich salad
with warm bacon dressing and awesome roastred pork loins for lunch.
And what do most of you in SoCal do today? You walked the floor at a
stuffy trade show in Long Beach. Don't feel so bad - I'll be there too
tomorrow. Come by the Halcyon booth and say hello. We are adjacent to
the PADI booth!
