there was no bossing or bullying of any kind. Hell, a certain GUE instructor was even sighted wearing split fins (damn if i didn't forget my camera). We were not even required to have a DIR rig. I had already switched to a BP & wings, so grabbing the long hoses was a trivial next step, and i figured that would enable me to get more out of the course (damn good thing i did....learned a lot more, the nature of which, one cannot get off the internet). Jim Hoffman at Scuba Toys rents back plates and wings (better make sure you have the crotch-strap though) for those who don't yet own theirs. The rental rate is cheap; eight or twelve bucks for a day i believe.
