Check out Marine Room (corner of Roseland and Spindrift in La Jolla). Heading south from the entry, the area is shallow rocky reefs. Typically lots to see in the snorkeling depth range. Also, right off the entry there are usually lots of leopard sharks in 3 - 4 feet of water. Hard to imagine that a 6-year old boy wouldn't be interested in sharks.
