It was probably a soupfin.
7' is toward the large end for a soupfin.
The very large ones fatten a bit and look much more intimidating than their smaller and thinner brethren.
I have seen quite a few large soupfins at both San Clemente & San Nicolas Islands over the last few years, especially on the back side of Clemente.
I usually see them when hunting, because I tend to be the first one off the boat.
I saw a 7½' soupfin landed and measured on Manhattan Beach pier about 1969 or 1970, unfortunately no one had a scale big enough to weigh it.
