Chris is probably correct, it was likely a Soupfin shark. Soupfin sharks are actually seen quite a lot by free divers. One was photographed by a free diver off the King Harbor Breakwater last year at the GLACD Underwater Photo Fish Hunt (hunting with a camera, not a spear) in September.
It is one of several fish you will see more of if you go out free diving and leave the tanks on the beach. From what the free divers tell me, they are very skittish and leave the area when they hear bubbles from regulators.
