I have encountered curious soupfins before.
They are not always skittish, just usually.

Last year near the end of the runway at San Clemente I had a large 6½ soupfin swim around me several times before moving
on. It came no closer than about 30 ft,, but made several passes.

About five years ago I had a pair act aggressively toward me one time near the boilers at San Nick.
I was hanging on a kelp stalk at 15 feet doing my safety stop, the water was about 50 ft deep, with about 80 ft visibility.
I had two nice calico bass on my stringer.
Two soupfins, about 6 ft each, swam in and started circling me and darting rapidly back and forth.
Their actions made me a bit nervous.
Looking at my stringer I decided that they needed the bass more than I did.
I opened the stringer and shook off the bass.
The sharks each grabbed one and swam off.
