I was a little beach rat climbing around the cliffs at Malibu and PV while my mother and older brother were diving. Mom was head of the YMCA aquatic staffs for Inglewood and Hawthorne.
I have dim, early childhood memories of the divers coming back with bags full of urchins. They told me that they were on urchin kill dives because the urchins were out of control and destroying the kelp beds.
Even the Golden Days were a bit tarnished at the edges. Diving these days ain't all that bad - especially up North!
