Thanks for those who posted suggestions; we tried them all. La Jolla Cove turned out to be the best snorkeling for a 6-year-old -- lots of fish in and around the sea grasses right within the cove close to shore. The Marine Room is an interesting site, but the good stuff seems to be somewhat offshore beyond the breakers; my son might be ready for it in another year or two. But he had a lot of fun there and generally along the La Jolla Shores beach riding waves.
