You don't mention anything about your trim and bouyancy when your mask was off, which was the point of my example..
As I noted, most, if not all, ( as in your instruction apparently isn't in this class) does the skill while the student is in the sitting position and while they are prepared for it to happen which is counterproductive in the real life emergency...
