I was told that sometimes when you have a chest cold small pockets of air can be trapped in your avoli (spelling?) behind a mucus coating lining your lungs. As a result when you ascend the resulting expansion can cause tissue damage to the lung.

During a rapid ascent it might be true.

Is mucus really that strong? Don't know, but the guy who told me this is someone who should know. He said IANTD will not allow him to teach people with chest colds for this reason. (He refunded my friends money, so I think he really believes it).
