mucus can do that. that is why it is risky to dive soon after a cold or flu, until all the mucus has cleared from the lungs, as in coughing. this also happens with smokers. it happened up here in NorCal once to a fire fighter who had recently worked a fire, then went diving, then died. we discuss this case in point up here in our Medic/First Aid courses. fatality was at Point Lobos State Reserve in Carmel a couple of years ago.
