I thought JJ's response to the adaptation argument the best:
Close your eyes and run through your house. Eventaully you'll learn how to navigate without sight based on barking your shins, running into walls and learning the hard way where the furniture is. You will have adapted. Next, repeat the experiment but have someone move the furniture each time. By extension, deep air is like having someone move the furniture and layout a couple of bear traps.
