What about this? and right in our bakcyard.
The story, as recently retold on the freedive list:

"Last Sunday two divers went to Salta Verde Point at Catalina. One of them entered the water while the other had not gotten in yet. The guy in the water saw a school of yellowtail and dove on them. While he was extended in aiming position, the yellowtail suddenly parted and a 15' great white shark rushed the diver with his mouth open and teeth exposed. The diver, shot the shark in the snout. He thinks the shaft penetrated about three feet into the shark. The next thing he remembers is being on the surface screaming. The guy in the boat heard the scream and looked up to see the shark on the surface departing with the diver's float. The diver came swimming rapidly to the boat and was hoisted aboard, shaken but intact."
