L.A./Orange County near-shore snorkeling?

Thanks in part to suggestions here, my 6-year-old son and I have been checking out various snorkeling spots. Although comfortable with mask, snorkel and fins, he isn't quite ready to swim 75 or 100 feet out past breakers, so we have to limit ourselves to sites where the surf is reasonably mild and there's good stuff to see very close to shore.

So far his favorites have been (a) Lover's Cove at Catalina (even though the rocky beach is tough to walk on), and (b) La Jolla Cove (even though the stands of sea grass get a little thick in places).

Are there any sites roughly similar to these in L.A. or Orange County, say from about Malibu to Laguna? Everything I can think of (Shaw's Cove, etc) involves more of a surface swim than I think he can handle. Thanks in advance for any ideas.
