I think it was back in '92 or so, I wrote an article in Discover Diving (no defunct) on the topic of recertification. My position was if someone has not been in the water for a year they should have to be recertified in some sort of refresher course. At the time I was attacked by another popular dive magazine, I think they called me "self proclaimed protector of mankind," a title I sort of like. Anyway, all of PADI and NAUI were also very much against the idea at the time. I don't know how they feel today. The idea that someone could get certified today and not dive for seven years and go right back in the water and be considered safe is laughable as much back in '92 as it is today. If you believe that certification is a good thing you have to believe recertification is also good. Okay, let me get down off my horse.
