Thanks for the reply. The sad fact is that it wouldn't
take all that much to make the basic open water classes
better. A bit more time in class and pool, and a couple
of more dives for certification. I'm still always pleasantly
surprised how much better students are after 6 dives than after
only 4 (PADI). Again, I'd love to teach the course
I have in mind, but very few people are going to be interested
in investing that kind of time.
BTW, I was taught old-school NAUI back east, and when
an employer made me cross over to PADI, I gotta tell
you I had to hold my nose. Have fun in Catalina.
