Steve, if you hook one on light line that may be a good option, but if the angler is using 20lb test or more i think it may not be best for the fish if he drags a length of line around as it will get caught up in the kelp or rocks. If the fish were to get fatigued, he would not have the strength to break free. With the device, the fish has to be brought to the surface, but does not have to be brought out of the water. The fish should NEVER be brought out of the water. Fish are the among most fragile animals on earth and should always be handled with extreme care.

The reality is that most anglers are going to bring the fish to the surface, this gives them an option other than letting it float away.
