If you are enjoying the diving in Northern California and are going to stay in the sport, bite the bullet and do it right. You will be warmer and each dive will be more enjoyable plus a dry suit gives you redundant lift. You'll only use your BC on the surface a huge safety factor. I've bought several wetsuits and compressed them enough times that they lost their insulating qualities. Just my .02
