I love it when folks tell you to buy something you can't afford, like a drysuit. I dove semi-dry in Monterey for years and found the attached hood is a big plus. I was using a Connelly Deep Heet suit, one peice jumpsuit with a sleeveless tunic and attached hood that went over it. The most comfortable suit I'd ever owned. You will never need to dive without the hood if you need a 7mm suit. The attached hood cuts down drastically on water flow in and out of the suit keeping you much warmer. Scubapro makes a nice set up with several pieces that you layer, I liked the extra layer on my torso, especially when the water got in the mid-forties. Maybe you could rent one to try it out? Good Luck
