Translation of MHK's responses: Pick a better class of student.
In other words, scuba instructors should be picking only students who (1) are financially well off (both to buy the gear that they _must_ have and to pay for the hordes of assistants), (2) are in excellent physical condition, (3) have excellent watermanship skills, (4) want to dive in cold water frequently, (5) are extremely intelligent, (6) are not math-phobic, (7) have a high tolerance for boredom, (8) have flexible work schedules and an unlimited amount of time to devote to scuba training, and (9) don't have any other hobbies or outdoor activities.
Gee, the solution is so blindingly obvious it is amazing that no one thought of it before. ;-)
