Carol,
You obviously are curious of what is being offered and it's free, do it. If someone holds you back you'll always feel like you missed out on something. You will learn, try out the gear and enjoy a BBQ. I'm all for education. Don't skip the rescue course before the master. The rescue taught many self and buddy rescue techniques. Gets you up to snuff on CPR and Dan O2 administration. The master course was also very worthwhile. On one of the night dives at Crescent Bay I had to navigate a course setup with buoys first with a dive light and then with a cylum(sp) stick and a compass. Lots of physics and theory.
