1st of all, if it were me in your shoes, i would'vea
asked the 'naui' instructor if he himself had
ever attended a 'dir' demo. if his response was
'no', then he would instantly remind me of a local
dive shop owner who bad-mouthed 'halycon' having
never tried the gear himself.
2nd of all, i've attended 2 'dir' demos, a long
time ago now (once in jan 2000 and once again
in march 2000). perhaps things have changed since
then, but to be absolutely honest, there wasn't
as much rec talk as there was cave and penetration
wreck discussion. but there was still enough
discussion that the take home message was basically
"what's good and safe for cave/wreck diving, is
also good enough for rec no overhead diving".
i think that you should definitely attend the
'dir' demo, especially if it's going to be at
catalina. = : )
ultimately, this this is meant to benefit you,
not your instructor: wouldn't you want to expand
your own horizon...?...
when all is said and done, why do you even need
to tell your instructor anything about where
you went on your own free time--it's your life, not
his(!)
if/when you are ready for 'master diver', then
you can do as you wish w/your 200$. in the meantime,
it's a free 'dir' demo and YOU!!!! can choose
how to apply it, if at all.
best wishes--and have fun!!

((ps. if you haven't figured out yet, i'm not
'dir'--and don't know if i ever will be--but
i definitely have taken issues more seriously,
and attending 'dir' demos has made me think
more about such issues as gear configurations, etc.
at the very least, you will--hopefully--get to
think more, and that's ALWAYS a good thing.
being stupid and blind is not a good thing.))
