I think he's referring to the attitude toward diving. The DIR folks refer to as "holistic" which the dictionary defines as: "Emphasizing the importance of the whole and the interdependence of its parts." Taken verbatim, that means DIR is all or nothing at all. It's black or white, no shades of grey, no semi-DIR. That's really the core of the DIR controversy.
