"Well going down stwally's list I don't see any
items that I deem absolutely necessary to make
a sucessful dive here in California that there
isn't a viable alternative too. As to your
question on contingencies and philosophies, can
you be more specific."

Yes, I can perhaps be more specific, but more
input is needed first. More input is also
required on stwally's part to describe the type
of diving he will be doing with the config he
outlined.

I agree in regards to whether or not the gear
was required to make a successful dive or not,
especially if you consider coming back alive
and un-injured a successful dive, but I
don't believe that was the input was he was
seeking. As to viable alternative, you know
as well as I that is a subjective statement that
is mandated by the planned activity underwater.
You can dive to 30' in a kelp bed with a
configuration and phylosophy requirement much
less demanding than diving to 180' into a
wreck, and all types of dives inbetween.
Regardless, let's start again on the first
item of my inquiry;

Please tell us what type of gear 'isn't the best
for [you] and [your] style'. After we tackle
this one, we will move onto the rest of the overall
question.
