USP = U.S. Pharmaceutical which dictates the purity of the talc used in medicinal products.

I'm always amazed at people who get excited about chemicals generally regarded as safe but smoke cigarettes, drive above the speed limit, don't use seat belts, use lots of salt, are overweight, eat fatty foods, and don't excercise. My attitude is that if the risk is less than that associated with riding a bicycle then there's little enough to worry about.

Suspected carcinogens are given to stains of mice that are known to spontaneously get cancers. The amounts of the chemical used are many, many times the amounts that humans would ever be exposed to. Then, the numbers of cancers are compared to control groups. The numbers of additional cancers must be statistically significant. In the case of talc they are not.
