Hey JW, that depends, if you are beach diving your 15'stop is in the sand at 15' ft( you have already equalize your bouyancy getting there). You can pull the console out in front of you and set it in the sand.
If you are on a line, you hold the line in your right hand and the console and inflator in the left(it works, you did it for 15 yrs.). Lets remember this was for a non-DIR set-up.
I like my wraist gauges for boat diving but not for the beach, I have seen to many diver lose watches and gauges in the surf line.
