Yes, a manifold block is the way to go. A reg switch or toggling back and forth between mask/reg and a FFM is a big no no in cold water.
I am currently designing an idiot proof manifold, just another weekend project . . . .
I dove with a pre-made one about eight years ago, and I did not like it. It was made by a guy in Framingham ( spelling ?? ) Mass.
The bottom line is the divesite dictates the equipment, and never the other way around. The gear gets me to where I wanna go, rather than the gear dictating the dive site ! ( a common problem I see in the tech circles. )
