About 10 years ago, the San Diego scuba death rate in the kelp may have been running at about 4 a year. It was certainly substantially higher than it is now.
Over the last 5 years, the overall scuba death rate has been low, on the order of 1 a year. (The number of San Diego scuba deaths in the last 12 months have been atypical.) None of the deaths in the last 5 years has been obviously kelp-related.
