If you're diong a 4-dive basic cert., I think you're best off doing the dives in easy conditions where you can focus on the skills you are demonstrating, and on getting comfortable underwater, THEN supplementing your training before you beach dive, with a 3R's session or two. You want to dive at or below your level of training, and 3R's will help you expand that training.

3R's is Rocks, Reefs and Rip, recurring half-day workshops focusing solely on beach diving, held at various popular local diving spots. They're organized by LA County and sponsored by GLACD, the president of which I am sure will jump in here now -- ERIC, you listening? Anyway, it's $5 and you do most of the workship in skin diving gear, NOT scuba, to get familiar with the surf entry/exit techniques. Everyone's really nice, and you can show up solo.

Anyway, check out www.glacd.org for more info.

I think the next one is August 11 at Pt Dume.

Welcome underwater!
