I would say they require different skills. If it was me I'd go for both beach and boat instruction. You'll need to learn to read the conditions and environment. On boat dives the skipper's do a great job of finding protected anchorage that is safe to dive. Moving through the surf zone can be tricky and hazardous, it shouldn't be done without some education on entry/exit techniques, rescue, etc. Follow up with Caldivers advise.
