in the old days, before the advent of mechanized farming, a person would slaughter livestock by using a large iron wedge on a longish handle (longer than an axe handle, hence the term "pole"). It took a certain amount of skill to be able to cleanly kill a cow or goat or sheep or hog with such a tool and if one was off even slightly then the animal would thrash about or stumble or generally act in a rather more stupid fashion than usual. Kinda like Sport Chalet salespeople when they see what an $80.00 SS backplate and a $20.00 piece of webbing are for.
