As for the mask drill, I would estimate that the guys had there mask off for about 20 minutes or so and that's the point of the training, well atleast one of them anyway..
The idea is to see if the student is comfortable swimming without a mask, but is also designed to simulate no vis.. SO you accomplish two skills at once, and then of course we do a reg freeflow while mask is off to see if the presence of mind is on holding the line while shutting down the valve.. If you let go of the line in 0 vis, there's a good chance you'll not find it again..
I don't know if you've ever been in a complete silt out, but trust me you can't see shit....
