I'm very nearsighted and I've found using a corrective mask very helpful. While it's true that things are magnified underwater, it doesn't make them any more in focus. If you need glasses to get around on land, then you'll need corrective lenses to help you get around underwater.

Even if you end up buying most of your gear online, you should definately buy your mask from a store. You need to try different masks on so you'll get a good fit and you'll need to try out different lenses to see which correction is best for you. If off-the-shelf correction isn't working for you, you can always get a perscription from your optomatrist and have the lenses custom made.
