I've been hearing those rumors from those that claim to be "in the know" since it went down. Other friends in the Navy say it's just rumor; that type of "training" exercise is to expensive and since the city of SD would be involved, too big a pain.
I'm afraid she'll stay the way she is, and that's just fine with me.
Some local Instructors were actually thinking of taking OW classes out there to complete training before she sank awry. It's a zoo some days now, can't imagine if she had laid upright. She's a real wreck now and I hope they let her be.
As for the sand filling up the deep exits (follow-up), not all. Some in fact are scooped out more than last summer and you can get to 106 now. Others are filled in as described; the engine room as well has a big sand deposit. The winter swells here have a way of changing the bottom and will change the wreck every year.
