MARINE LIFE PROTECTION ACT SITING WORKSHOPS
To Discuss Preliminary Concepts for Networks of Marine Protected Areas
July 2001 Regional Meetings
The Department of Fish and Game is planning a set of workshops to receive comments and exchange information on the initial draft concepts of the Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) planning team. This team has used current science; data on fishing activities, marine habitat, and ecological values; and input from Department staff to create its initial draft concepts.
The purpose of these workshops is to receive broader based input on the initial draft concepts for consideration in subsequent revised draft concepts.
The workshops will be held on weekday evenings in the following regions (please see calendar below for locations and dates):
North marine region: California-Oregon border to Pt. Arena
North-Central marine region: Pt. Arena to Pt. Aņo Nuevo, including Farallon Islands
South-Central marine region: Pt. Aņo Nuevo to Pt. Conception, including San Miguel, Santa Rosa, and San Nicolas Islands
South marine region: Pt. Conception to California-Mexico border, including other islands
Maps of the initial draft concepts for each region will be provided at the workshops in that region, along with information on how and why the concepts were created. This information will also be available approximately 2 weeks before the meetings on this web site. The web site will also contain directions to the meeting locations.
For individuals without access to the internet, the information will be available at any Department Marine Region office.

To Individuals Interested in the Marine Life Protection Act:
The Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA: Assembly Bill 993 authored by Assemblyman Shelly) became effective January 1, 2000. This language is now included in the Fish and Game Code (Sections 2850 to 2863). The purpose of the act is to improve the array of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in California waters through a comprehensive Master Plan that the Department of Fish and Game (Department) is required to develop. This Master Plan will recommend alternative MPA networks within state waters (from shore out to three miles) to the Fish and Game Commission (Commission).
The MLPA requires the Department to present the draft Master Plan to the Commission by January 1, 2002. A Master Plan Team (Team), consisting of Department and other agency representatives and eight scientists, is assisting the Department in developing the Master Plan (please see Team List). This letter is to inform you of the Team's approach to develop the Master Plan and to invite your initial comments.
