Well, not that I care much (I usually descend horizontal), but a swimming diver definately has better control than a floating diver, so a diver swimming down is by default going to have better control than a horizontal floater. By the way, what problems (other than clearing) are you worried about when descending?
In any case, though I almost never go down feet first, I have heard it recommended to allow for easier ear clearing.... very practical.
